At Nanpean Primary School, the children are at the heart of our Early Years curriculum. Our goal is to nurture and support all children to explore, be curious, develop resilience and independence and become confident communicators, thriving and fulfilling their individual potential in a calm and purposeful environment. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we follow a carefully structured curriculum that is guided by pupils' interests and designed to spark curiosity and enthusiasm. The children benefit from a play-based curriculum where child-initiated exploration is balanced with purposeful adult-directed activities to ensure that every child makes better-than-expected progress from their individual starting points. Adults are able to model, scaffold and extend learning to ensure that all children acquire essential skills and knowledge needed to reach developmental milestones. Â

Our timetable and curriculum structure
The timetable is carefully planned to maximise learning potential. Our timetable includes…
Targeted intervention and support – Daily small group or targeted individual intervention to support children to close gaps in learning, achieve their next steps and make accelerated progress.Â
Read Write Inc – Daily sessions to develop strong early reading and writing skills. This structured, systematic programme supports children in learning to decode words confidently and apply phonics in their writing.
Mastering Number - A daily maths session designed to develop number sense, fluency, and confidence in key mathematical concepts. This builds strong foundations for later success in mathematics.
A language rich environment – To enable children to develop vocabulary, engage in peer interactions, take turns and listen actively. Adults model the use of key vocabulary and encourage sustained interactions with all children.Â
Outdoor learning time – Children have access to provision outdoors every day. The provision supports the learning within our curriculum and encourages children to be independent, creative and resilient. Outdoor learning opportunities are planned to support children’s curiosity of the world around them. We regularly use our school woodland area and observe changes through the seasons.
Drawing Club – Immersing the children in a world of stories, developing key vocabulary and encouraging imagination and individual creativity whilst enabling the children to develop fine motor skills and apply their phonics and writing skills in a creative way.Â
Life Skills sessions – These take place every day. Sessions are linked to skills we feel are important for the children to develop during their time in Reception. These skills include putting their coat, shoes and socks on independently, using a knife and
fork to cut their school dinner, using scissors, brushing their teeth, looking after their environment and learning how to self-regulate when faced with a challenge. These skills are planned for across each term and revisited throughout the year.Â
Transition
It is important to us that the children are happy to come to school. Several activities are planned throughout the summer term to ensure that the transition between feeder nurseries and Nanpean Primary School are smooth and supportive to all children.Â
Welcome cards are sent to the children in April.
Feeder nurseries are visited and key workers spoken to from May to July. The Early Years Lead visits our main feeder nursery throughout the year to develop relationships with staff and children.Â
A ‘Welcome’ meeting enables parents to understand what the reception year entails and how best they can support their children during their first year at school.Â
Home visits are conducted, with an ‘All about me’ form completed alongside the parents.
‘Who Am I?’ scrapbooks are given to families to fill throughout the Summer break and the children share these with adults and peers in September to develop and strengthen relationships and build their confidence, especially in the first few settling weeks. Each scrapbook contains photos, pictures and information that allows adults to get to know each child.Â
Several Stay and Play sessions are organised throughout June and July to ensure the children familiarise themselves with their new environment. Parents attend with their child and this is a great opportunity to see the provision and to talk to staff before their child starts school.Â
School readiness information is shared with parents and parents are asked to complete a school readiness survey about their child. This enables us to understand the needs of the children before they start and plan our provision accordingly.Â
