Your child will have opportunities to read during the week and will read to a teacher once a week during guided reading. They will be asked to change their book themselves first thing in the morning. It is expected that the children will read at home at least 5 times per week. Children will be rewarded for this using our Reading Karate scheme. Each reading ‘session’ should be for at least 10 minutes and will require an adult signature in the reading record for verification. Reading in upper key stage 2 is obviously of vital importance for the children’s progress. Therefore children who do not read at home 5 times will make up the time in school during play times.
The children will receive their homework on a Friday. They will have a homework book which will contain a Maths and English activity based on what we have been learning in class. It is expected that homework will be completed and handed in by the following Wednesday. If homework is not received on a Wednesday then children will be asked to complete this in school during play times. Children will be tested on spellings and multiplication facts every week. Time is built into lessons to practice these, but your child will bring home a copy to give them a further opportunity to practice. Quick recall of the timetables facts is an essential part of their Maths learning and weaknesses in this area can often causes barriers during calculation work. We would strongly advise that this is an area your child practises regularly, even if they already feel they know their tables up to 12.
